English

We read because… we want to… we need to… and we know how!

Whole-class reading at the start of each English lesson enables children to experience the high quality vocabulary needed for their own writing.

Text-based units of work promote a whole-school culture of reading for pleasure.  Daily story time immerses children into another world and models story language and intonation.

Children understand the importance of reading in order to access the whole curriculum.  We want all of our children to be confident readers in order to gain the greatest opportunities in later life.

Phonics

At Goodyers End Primary we aim for all our children to become fluent, confident readers who are passionate about reading.   We use Read Write Inc Phonics (RWI) to enable all children to learn to read fluently and at speed.

We aim to engage all children by using a range of games throughout the lessons and by using ‘Fred Frog’ to further this.  The children are engaged through learning a range of rhymes which help the children to recognise the sounds.

They have opportunities to practise their phoneme grapheme correspondences, read with their partners and develop their comprehension skills in stories by answering a variety of discussion questions.  They also have opportunities to practise building sentences out loud before they write.
